A Fashion Editor's Guide To Sample Sales

We all love designer clothing and accessories, but most of us wish that the steep designer prices were lower. So what is a fashionista to do? Shop sample sales of course! Sample sales typically is a means for retail businesses to discard extra merchandise from their showrooms. The clothing was usually worn on the catwalk and on photo shoots. Sample sales are a great way to get near to perfect clothing and accessories at a fraction of the retail price.

How To Find Sample Sales

In Print
Many local newspapers and magazines list sample sales. New York Magazine and Time Out NY are two titles that are known for their heavy coverage of sample sales. Fashion trade publications also list upcoming and current sample sales.

Email
Sign up for designers' newsletters on their websites and rest assured when they have a sample sale they will send you an email dishing out all the details of the sale.

Online
Sample sales are difficult to come by, but with the power of the Internet finding sample sales is a cinch. My favorite website for sample sale hunting is http://www.samplesaleforum.com/ a cool new site that lets members list up-to-the-minute sample sales and connect with fashionistas nationwide. The site lists physical sample sales happening right now in New York City and Los Angeles and also online sample sales from top online sample sale sites including Gilt and Editor's Closet.

What To Look For At Sample Sales
It's easy to get excited at a sample sale and purchase everything you see. Keep these tips in mind:
  • Make sure it fits your body now.
  • Check that all seams, hems, buttons and zippers are in tact.
  • Only buy an item if you are absolutely in love with it, if you only wear the item once then it's not really a deal.

How To Survive At A Sample Sale

Sample sales somehow bring out the bad in some, remember the sample sale scene from Confessions of A Shopaholic? They can be packed with fashionistas all vying for the Gucci Jackie O bag on sale at 60% off. Some things to keep in mind when shopping sample sales:

  • Arrive early. At least a half hour before the sale starts.
  • Bring cash. This way you won't over spend and regret it, seeing as most sample sales are final sale.
  • Dress lightly. There are rarely dressing rooms at sample sales so be smart and wear minimal clothing and easy to take off shoes to try on things easily.

Sample sales are a great way to cultivate a closet full of designer clothing for a steal. Happy shopping and good luck fashionistas!

How to Be Glamorous On A Budget

Congratulations! You're out shopping for the best of reasons. The whole world is on sale. But what are you shopping for? Another cheap t-shirt? Forget it. Choose glamour. Give your shopping brain cells a reason to live... Who cares if you're broke when you make it look so good? Glamour is affordable, anyway. It's a state of mind.
Be Glamorous.
Think, does this look glamourous? This is the standard by which all must be measured. Let's say you're in the store, holding up another future trash tee shirt. How can you break free? Ask yourself this brutal question every time. Is this glamorous? By the virtue of having to ask, it's probably not. Glamour is elusive and you must move on.
Wear A Dress.
Put on a dress. Try wandering into a far off land: the dress department. Yes, it feels like Mars, but glamour is best found in a dress. Ignore the sizes; they're meaningless. Your glamour-ness is more important. Try a dress on to fit the largest, most glorious part of your body. Then get the thing altered. No woman of daring would consider otherwise.

Be Au Courant.
Step into this century. Some readers can bypass this step, but note that this isn't about age. Just look in a full-length mirror. You know who you are. Your clothing silhouette is most important. It needs to be current. Don't go down the weight sadness path now. You'll defeat glamour every time. When a woman of girth or bones announces she looks magnificent, the world is at her feet, ignoring her size. Another attribute of glamour.

Your Hairstyle Counts.
Do a hair check. What is glamour without the hair? A sad pile of protein. Well, smooth it out and brush it into glory. Smile into the mirror and think about all the money you're saving.

Accessories Count Big Time.
Ah, the biggest glamour killer. Mostly found in the concept of too much. Too much jewelry. Too much purse. We're not layer cakes. Let accessories adorn you. They're lucky to see the light of day.

Add Some Sparkle.
We may have lost all the value in our 401K's but why look like it? Not into the bling? Use sparkle, sheen or glisten. Buy a cheap pair of wild (for you) sunglasses. Step it up a bit. Be daring. Just don't go tacky on me. The best glamour is based on mystery and intrigue.

Selfridges hits back with a extravagent shopping weekend!

Due to the credit crunch and the long-awaited Westfield shopping centre in London, the west end has been hit the hardest by the financial crisis with less than a quarter of its regular visitors deciding not to go shopping on the high street. So to boost sales the shops have been hosting pre-Christmas sales to boost those depressing figures and with 20% off days, 2 for 3 deals and exclusive 3 day shopping events its no wonder i have been persuaded to loosen my purse strings again.

Of all the sales I've been to I am definitely most excited for tomorrow, Selfridges will be hosting a 3 day extravaganza of 20% off clothes, 10% off beauty and freebies with most purchases over a certain amount. That means Chanel dresses for £200 less, Luella shoes for a quarter of the price and don't even get me started on the concession area where the likes of ALL SAINTS and Topshop rein. Perfect for getting all those Christmas presents, those Christian Dior gloves for the mother, the Ted Baker skirt for the sister and so on... Enjoy shopping!

Required Reading: The One Hundred by Nina Garcia

The One Hundred : A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own by Nina Garcia is not a read you put away and forget about after the last page. It's an essential guide you keep and refer back to as you build and enhance your wardrobe. The alphabetically ordered contents make it easy to actually remember all the fashion essentials. As a Haute Mimi fan I'm pretty sure you readers own if not all at least 3/4 of the essentials from Ray Ban Aviators to the famed Tiffany wave cuff. Even then Garcia expands on the must haves to kick your wardrobe up a notch. One will really enjoy the small tidbits on fashion history. Who knew the eternal Chanel 2.55 quilted bag was named so because of its debut on February 1955. Readers will appreciate how Garcia is very specific about her picks down to the colors of the accessories. The illustrations by one of my favorite artists, Ruben Toledo are also fantastic. This book is great for those who are new to the fashion world and would like a crash course on the industry. It's also great for us who need a refresher. Get it here.

Ooh La La The Secrets Of French Chic By Gabrielle Teare

With Carla Bruni set to become the new Jackie O, it is time to get some of that seemingly effortless chic, poise and polish into your wardrobe. Not for years has the political landscape had someone as stylish and elegant. How do you achieve this look? One way to do this is visit a Fashion Stylist. The other is to follow my secret tips....

Fashion in Milan, Paris and London remains very different to the US. Europeans love America for casual clothes and will stock up on all the basics, jeans etc. Particularly with the current dollar rate.Visit Paris, and arriving on Eurostar what you notice is Quality. So how do Parisians do it? Here's How:

Invest in good jewellery. From waitresses to shop assistants, French women will wear beautiful pieces clearly saved for. Costume jewellery is often large scale and chosen to match colours. Parisians will buy the dress and at the same time the matching must-have necklace. Galerie Lafayette and other department stores carry vast choice.

Shoes must be leather, high quality, as opposed to high fashion and are chosen every season.
Bags are another investment piece, whatever the budget quality is paramount.

Each season Parisians flock to the stores and buy just one or two key items. This is not random shopping, it is carefully considered choices. Colours and styles are chosen to complement existing items.

Scarves are everywhere, worn in every permutation by young and old alike.

Cosmetics, hair and skin care are highly valued, with regular facials, tints etc. to present a groomed look. Many shops carry large ranges of small diffusion beauty brands at every price level.

High fashion trends are cheaper and mixed in with the investment buys and designed to last one season.

Lingerie is a whole universe. Big department stores will have a whole floor given over to lingerie. French women know they look good from the inside out. This is true grooming.

Perfume. It is the nation of Perfumers -look good smell good.

Knowing what truly suits them and buying it. This is probably the key secret. If you don’t know this, use a Personal Shopper or Image Consultant and learn. What you learn will pay dividends for the rest of your life.

Back to School: The Quintessential Essentials

The Wide Leg Pant
You may want to still pack your skinny jeans, but don't forget to buy a pair of wide leg pants at your favorite retailer. See by Chloe has a retro inspired "classic wide leg flare jean," which has an amazing lengthening and slimming effect. For a dressier look, Theory has a many wide leg options this season.

The Open Front Cardigan
Perfect for walking around campus or for those cool fall nights, the open front cardigan is a necessary staple in any lady's wardrobe. Even though most people opt for the black or the gray, this red "cozy cardigan" by DKNY is made out of silk and cashmere. Luxurious.

The Fitted Blazer
The fitted blazer is the epitome of prep school chic. It makes you look elegant and put together without all of the fuss and pressure of assembling the ultimate outfit. Rugby by Ralph Lauren perfected the craft of the blazer.

The Full Skirt
This classic piece is making a comeback and it's ready to be in your closet. Combine with colors or florals like this skirt by Aqua.

The Oversized Bag
Every girl needs arm candy. Necessary for carrying books, a laptop, makeup and magazines (sometimes all at once), an oversized bag is a must-have! My current favorite is Botkier's Large Monica Satchel in black.

Your Boyfriend's White Shirt
Simply take from his closet. If you're single and fabulous, fake the look by buying a "His White Shirt" from JCrew.

Men's Essentials Series: The Shirt By Dapper Kid

A good selection of shirts are essential to any man's clothing collection. The shirt can be worn both dressed up and dressed down and adds an instant smartest to any outfit. Adding a simple tie can add class, yet an open collar can exude a laid back and effortless style. The key to looking good in a shirt is simply knowing which type of shirt you require for your specific outfit and some basic rules for wearing a shirt.

The most important thing any man should know, is a simple understanding of a shirt and the types available. This may seem pretty straightforward, however armed with this knowledge you will find that you are able to make a more appropriate choice when shopping and when dressing generally. The construction of a shirt is simple enough to work out from visual inspection. The key parts to identify are: the collar, the spread, the placket, the cuffs, the arms, the two front panels, the yoke and the back panel. These are the pieces that make up your shirt, and the individuality of each piece will lend itself to which thickness of tie you can wear it with or whether or not you can wear it open collar, to name two examples.

Collar

The collar and spread of a shirt are undoubtedly the most important parts of a shirt, both visually and style wise. The collar has been a part of men's fashion for hundreds of years and the modern day meaning of the word is thought to have emerged around the year 1300. However even though it has been around for this long, many men still are unsure as to the types and which to wear on a certain outfit.

The basic type of collar is actually called the 'spread collar', which is seen most often in the shops. It tends to be between 3 and 6 inches between the tips of each respective collar, and this spacing is actually key to your look. With a smaller spread you will want to go for a thinner tie blade and a thinner knot, for example a basic four-in-hand. With a wider spread you will be able to go for a thicker knot, such as a half or full Windsor. These shirts are mostly worn with a tie, however depending on the fabric and cut, you can wear casually, for example with a sweater or cardigan. For the smarter spread collar you will often require 'collar stays', which are placed behind the tips of the collar, usually in a pocket already sewn in by the manufacturer. Many shirts will come from the store with a plastic stay already in them, however good quality silver or metallic stays can be bought for a guaranteed straight collar.

'Slim Fit' shirts mostly require a thin blade tie, however more often that not can be worn open collar. The reason for this is that the spread is smaller and that the fit is more akin to a t-shirt. In contrast, a shirt with a wider spread will almost always require a tie, looking far too wide on the chest when worn open collared. The slim fit shirt, worn either open collar underneath a sweater, or with the collar open, rolled up sleeves and a casually hung tie, will look good. The versatility of a slim fit shirt therefore makes it a worthwhile basic addition to any man's wardrobe.

For a more casual shirt, simply paired with linen or denim trousers and footwear such as deck shoes or loafers, a 'button down' (usually an 'Oxford') shirt is worn. The button down refers to the collar, which is buttoned down at the tips, although the term is often incorrectly used in American English for a general 'dress shirt'. The button down collar is a feature of the sports shirt, and is usually not worn with a tie, although there have been exceptions such as Gianni Agnelli (who also wore his tie outside of his sweater!). The fabric of this type of shirt is usually a washed cotton, or often a linen blend. The shirt will be more fluid and less crisp, meaning it can be a very rugged and practical shirt. For a button down shirt a plain colour is not usually a good choice, opt rather for a micro print, plaid or 'washed' colour, to fit in with your casual look.

These are only two of the main types of collar, however other styles such as a 'tall' or 'eyelet' collar also exist. I chose these two as they are the most commonly worn collar styles, and indeed they are the most essential styles for a wardrobe.

Cuffs

The other main part of the shirt that must be chosen with care are the cuffs. Cuffs are a very important detail in a shirt that many men often overlook. There are various types of cuff, however the main two are the 'barrel' and the 'double' (often called 'French') cuffs. The barrel cuff is the most simple, with a single length cuff closed with a button. This type of cuff is most commonly found on casual shirts. The smarter option is the double cuff, which as the name suggests is double the length of a traditional cuff, and is folded back over on itself. This type of cuff is usually bound with cuff links of a silk tie. The cuff is therefore a detail point where a man can use a suitable decorative cuff to finish his look.

The amount of cuff shown is also a key consideration, as it actually draws attention to the hands and can visually lengthen the arms. One example would be early Hollywood dancers, who would use their white cuffs to draw attention to their hands, where they would twirl batons of sticks. Generally speaking you will want to show around one to two inches of cuff. One important thing to note is that when wearing a double cuff, you will want to avoid a full sleeve sweater or cardigan, as the prominent shape of the cuff will stretch your knitted top.

General Tips

General tips for a shirt are simple enough. Fit is a key consideration, you want something that is fitted at the shoulders and back. This is usually down to the 'yoke' of the shirt, which is the piece of material at the upper back of the shirt, that dictates the fit and shape of the rest of the shirt. You want the shirt to fit well, however not too feel restrictive when leaning forward. Equally your sleeves ought to cover most of your watch when you put your arms out in front of you. Remember that a slightly tapered shirt will usually be your best option, otherwise the fabric will balloon around your lower torso. The length of a shirt is also a key consideration, as it will determine how the shirt can be worn. Generally if the shirt is longer, you will have to tuck it in. If you want to wear the shirt loose, you will want a shorter length, that does not fall too low.

Ties

Ties are a natural accessory for most shirts, however this can also ruin an entire look.
  1. Generally speaking you want your tie to be darker than your shirt, as this provides the most definition and gives a focus.
  2. Colour wise, go with something that compliments your shirt, for example a dark blue on a light blue shirt.
  3. When going for clashing colours, make sure than the shades are correct.
  4. Patterns on both shirt and tie are most often avoided, however if done right they look wonderful. Usually a micro pattern on a shirt paired with a larger pattern on the tie will look better.
  5. The fabric of the tie you want is usually determined by the fabric of your shirt and suit. You will want fabrics such as wool for a washed cotton or linen shirt and wool suit, however for a crisper suit and shirt a silk tie is recommended.
  6. The width of the tie blade and type of knot are based on the spread of the shirt and the break point of your suit, so pay careful attention to these details.

How To Shop At Forever21

I can't stand shopping in store at Forever21. too many clothes, too many colors, and way too many shoppers. There is no room to breathe nor think. But, I love the clothes none the less and adore the online store. Always up to the minute, Forever21 is where I go to stock up on things I know won't last but just have to have. There are several things to keep in mind while shopping at Forever21 or any high street store.

Things To Keep In Mind:
  • When in doubt, buy black. Any other color will look cheap, believe me.

  • Don't buy a garment that already has any lose threads or any type of damage. If it can't hold up on the rack it definitely will not hold up after a wild night out.

  • With that in mind remember that these garments won't last for more than two seasons.

  • Look for the right fabrics, try to find cottons, silks and merino wools. They're the most comfortable fabrics and look much better than their artificial counterparts.

  • Stock up on costume jewelry. They have a great selection.
