Gift Guide | Via Spiga Handbags For The Ladies In Your Life

I recently was browsing online for Via Spiga bags to give as gifts to the ladies of the family for Christmas. Via Spiga makes very stylish, sophisticated and chic handbags that look ten times more expensive than they really are. They're also crafted with Italian sensibility and are extremely durable. I always find the best deals when I shop online and found some deep discounts on Via Spiga bags on ShopNBC. Online shopping always prevents me from making impulse buys. Also I cannot be bothered to wait on long lines during this busy holiday shopping season. To view the whole Via Spiga collection click here.

HM How To | Dress for a Themed Party

Poker party. Masquerade. Sports day. Halloween. We've all had those moments where we get invited to a themed party and have no idea what to wear or how to make something work. Regardless of if you're rocking it out in Manhattan to a 70's inspired birthday party for a girlfriend, or dancing at the hippest club in Los Angeles with a sports theme, here are some tips to keep in mind when dressing up for a night with a theme.

Keep the theme in mind. As lame or strange as the theme is, if someone has invited you to a themed party, then try to stick to the dress code. With something like a Hollywood theme, bold and statement are definite ways to go. This Phillip Lim allows you to remain fashionable while well within the theme's limit.
Think of words that you can link the theme to. I've been invited to a number of different outdoors and summer-themed picnic parties. Words that can often be associated to these would be 'spring' and 'floral' and 'flowy,' much like this Roberto Cavalli floral blouse.

Accessorize with the theme. Sometimes, it's the little things that make a big difference. I've found that some of the places that you can be the most meticulous is in jewelry and when you're accessorizing. I've personally never been invited to an Egyptian-themed party, but if I did, I would definitely be adding this Anita Ko ring to my accessories list.

Don't overdo it. While it's great to be a part of the party and the theme, you also don't want to overdo it and become the laughingstock of the night. Sometimes, I find it better to focus the bold on one specific aspect that will link you to the theme and go for something simpler along with it. For example, this Philip Crangi anchor pendant would be great for an ocean theme with a crisp white shirt and simplistic clothes.

So remember that no matter what theme it is, there's always a way to be a part of it, regardless of it's through the way you dress, accessorize, or even act. Above all, have fun with the theme! It's a great way to be original and fun at the same time.

How to Be Glamorous On A Budget

Congratulations! You're out shopping for the best of reasons. The whole world is on sale. But what are you shopping for? Another cheap t-shirt? Forget it. Choose glamour. Give your shopping brain cells a reason to live... Who cares if you're broke when you make it look so good? Glamour is affordable, anyway. It's a state of mind.
Be Glamorous.
Think, does this look glamourous? This is the standard by which all must be measured. Let's say you're in the store, holding up another future trash tee shirt. How can you break free? Ask yourself this brutal question every time. Is this glamorous? By the virtue of having to ask, it's probably not. Glamour is elusive and you must move on.
Wear A Dress.
Put on a dress. Try wandering into a far off land: the dress department. Yes, it feels like Mars, but glamour is best found in a dress. Ignore the sizes; they're meaningless. Your glamour-ness is more important. Try a dress on to fit the largest, most glorious part of your body. Then get the thing altered. No woman of daring would consider otherwise.

Be Au Courant.
Step into this century. Some readers can bypass this step, but note that this isn't about age. Just look in a full-length mirror. You know who you are. Your clothing silhouette is most important. It needs to be current. Don't go down the weight sadness path now. You'll defeat glamour every time. When a woman of girth or bones announces she looks magnificent, the world is at her feet, ignoring her size. Another attribute of glamour.

Your Hairstyle Counts.
Do a hair check. What is glamour without the hair? A sad pile of protein. Well, smooth it out and brush it into glory. Smile into the mirror and think about all the money you're saving.

Accessories Count Big Time.
Ah, the biggest glamour killer. Mostly found in the concept of too much. Too much jewelry. Too much purse. We're not layer cakes. Let accessories adorn you. They're lucky to see the light of day.

Add Some Sparkle.
We may have lost all the value in our 401K's but why look like it? Not into the bling? Use sparkle, sheen or glisten. Buy a cheap pair of wild (for you) sunglasses. Step it up a bit. Be daring. Just don't go tacky on me. The best glamour is based on mystery and intrigue.

WESTFIELD Shopping Centre

London's latest shopping mall has been more than a success, with millions of shoppers flocking there every week its no wonder the capital is reviving itself from the credit crunch. Though its been open for a few weeks now i've not had the time to head down to see it, today I took the time to have a look at what all the fuss was about. My conclusion? its a perfect mix of high street meets Harrods, with Louis Vuitton and Chanel in The Village and Topshop and H&M for the rest of us, its perfect to get all your christmas shopping done in one. The best thing is, there's great sales on at the moment which means you don't even need to travel far to get all your bits and bobs. Just next door, literally!

Selfridges hits back with a extravagent shopping weekend!

Due to the credit crunch and the long-awaited Westfield shopping centre in London, the west end has been hit the hardest by the financial crisis with less than a quarter of its regular visitors deciding not to go shopping on the high street. So to boost sales the shops have been hosting pre-Christmas sales to boost those depressing figures and with 20% off days, 2 for 3 deals and exclusive 3 day shopping events its no wonder i have been persuaded to loosen my purse strings again.

Of all the sales I've been to I am definitely most excited for tomorrow, Selfridges will be hosting a 3 day extravaganza of 20% off clothes, 10% off beauty and freebies with most purchases over a certain amount. That means Chanel dresses for £200 less, Luella shoes for a quarter of the price and don't even get me started on the concession area where the likes of ALL SAINTS and Topshop rein. Perfect for getting all those Christmas presents, those Christian Dior gloves for the mother, the Ted Baker skirt for the sister and so on... Enjoy shopping!

Fun Gifts For Men By D.K. Men's Fashion Editor

Christmas shopping for the men in one's life is never an easy task. It is a most puzzling time, where questions and doubts seem to plague our minds. What size is he again? Will he actually use this? What was that thing he was talking about that time that he wanted to get? In an attempt to help with the Christmas list, here are a few ideas...

Whether fifteen or fifty, the Nintendo Wii has the ability to turn even the most serious of men into giggling kids again. The motion sensitive games console has been hailed as one of the greatest ever successes in gaming history. Wii Sports seems to be the must have game for Christmas, and indeed in many stores the highly sought after game is already proving elusive. (Nintendo Wii Console with Wii Sports available for £179.99/$299.99)

How about ditching the digital camera for the delights of the Holga 'toy' camera? These medium format film machines have gained a cult following with their low fidelity images marked by character vignetting, other-worldly colours and light leaks. Having risen in popularity in recent years, this starter pack is the perfect introduction to years of experimentation and photographic surprises! Included within the pack are the Holga 120 CFN camera, a roll of medium format film, a roll of tape, 2 AA batteries and a Holga photography book. (Available via Urban Outfitters for £60/$85)

However, if you do indeed prefer a digital approach, the Flip Video Mino camcorder may be right up your alley. These pocket sized recorders have an in-built 2GB of memory, for up to one hour of recording, and feature a flip out USB for connecting quickly to your laptop. You can watch as you record on the 1.5 inch display and even upload your footage straight to YouTube. (Available via Amazon for £107.99/$159)

For the man who enjoys travelling, the Louis Vuitton European Cities Guide is the perfect choice. Each soft covered book features practical maps of the 32 chosen European cities and illustrations by Ruben Toledo. Individual copies are also available, which cover 36 major international cities including New York, Tokyo and Mumbai. Each book is packed with unique commentary on the character of each city and wonderful views into the local art, fashion, design and gastronomy. (Available via Louis Vuitton for £76/$145 or individually for £20/$38)

For a more unique and fun gift, Miracle Berry tablets are sure to excite. Made from natural berries native to West Africa, these pills contain a rogue glycoprotein molecule that binds to the tastebuds causing sour things to taste sweet. Simply put, once the freeze dried juices melt in your mouth, lemons will taste of toffee, vinegar of treacle and beer like a cholocate shake! The effect lasts for around half an hour to two hours, perfect for after dinner fun. (Available via Firebox.com for £9.95/$15)

Accessories are always an easy and fun gift idea. Paul Smith scarves are a wonderful way of introducing a little fun touch to a serious business suit. This colourful striped scarf will add a flair to even the dullest outfit. However if you feel Christmas would not be Christmas without the gift of socks, they also provide an equally colourful choice for that too. (Both pieces available via Paul Smith for £65/$135 and £14/$30 respectively)

Required Reading: The One Hundred by Nina Garcia

The One Hundred : A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own by Nina Garcia is not a read you put away and forget about after the last page. It's an essential guide you keep and refer back to as you build and enhance your wardrobe. The alphabetically ordered contents make it easy to actually remember all the fashion essentials. As a Haute Mimi fan I'm pretty sure you readers own if not all at least 3/4 of the essentials from Ray Ban Aviators to the famed Tiffany wave cuff. Even then Garcia expands on the must haves to kick your wardrobe up a notch. One will really enjoy the small tidbits on fashion history. Who knew the eternal Chanel 2.55 quilted bag was named so because of its debut on February 1955. Readers will appreciate how Garcia is very specific about her picks down to the colors of the accessories. The illustrations by one of my favorite artists, Ruben Toledo are also fantastic. This book is great for those who are new to the fashion world and would like a crash course on the industry. It's also great for us who need a refresher. Get it here.

Here are a few insider tips from my personal shopping experiences, believe me they are countless.

When To Shop For What:
White Pants, Resortwear: Shop for these things during the fall, Mid-September is probably the best time to score great white pants and coverups for the beach. You can put them away for next summer or that sexy getaway you re planning for the winter.

Coats: The best time is during mid spring say about April when prices are slashed. Be sure to go to boutiques like Burberry, April is the best time to get the trench of your dreams.
The Best Stores to find a bargain
Century 21: Best for cocktail dresses and shoes.
Daffys: Great for tights and stockings.

Forever 21: The best place for costume jewelry and also accessories like belts, and hats. Things that are so trendy you'll only wear them for a season while still looking current and not breaking the bank.

Back to School: The Quintessential Essentials

The Wide Leg Pant
You may want to still pack your skinny jeans, but don't forget to buy a pair of wide leg pants at your favorite retailer. See by Chloe has a retro inspired "classic wide leg flare jean," which has an amazing lengthening and slimming effect. For a dressier look, Theory has a many wide leg options this season.

The Open Front Cardigan
Perfect for walking around campus or for those cool fall nights, the open front cardigan is a necessary staple in any lady's wardrobe. Even though most people opt for the black or the gray, this red "cozy cardigan" by DKNY is made out of silk and cashmere. Luxurious.

The Fitted Blazer
The fitted blazer is the epitome of prep school chic. It makes you look elegant and put together without all of the fuss and pressure of assembling the ultimate outfit. Rugby by Ralph Lauren perfected the craft of the blazer.

The Full Skirt
This classic piece is making a comeback and it's ready to be in your closet. Combine with colors or florals like this skirt by Aqua.

The Oversized Bag
Every girl needs arm candy. Necessary for carrying books, a laptop, makeup and magazines (sometimes all at once), an oversized bag is a must-have! My current favorite is Botkier's Large Monica Satchel in black.

Your Boyfriend's White Shirt
Simply take from his closet. If you're single and fabulous, fake the look by buying a "His White Shirt" from JCrew.

Wardrobe Help For Men

How many times have you gone shopping and walked out empty handed? It happens to the best of us. To build a wardrobe that suits your lifestyle, you must first figure out your lifestyle needs. Active wear, business attire, or causal wear? Which one are you focusing on when shopping? Once you're armed with a direction, you have to know your wants as well as your needs. Two things to keep in mind are, how the new garment will work with items already in your wardrobe, and also the fit of the garment.

Purchasing solid colored items always works well with what you currently have. A new black belt and shoes would spruce up your already amazing look. Classic pieces like button down cardigans and layering pieces also work. Acquiring accessories is also a great way to add color and have fun with shopping.

By far, the most important aspect to shopping is the fit of the garment. The fit determines if the garment is right for you. You can take a pair of trousers found at Banana Republic and turn them into Gucci atelier with a trip to your tailor. Find a good tailor, all the great dressers in history had a personal tailor, so why not you? Who would not want clothes that accentuate your assets? Also, you have to know your body. Dress your body with clothes that are the most flattering for you. Having garments fit properly gives you a certain level of confidence that makes you feel good about yourself (If you are in the New York or Los Angeles areas, click over to Stitched Tailors for their tailoring services).

Building a wardrobe is a lifetime endeavor. It will constantly change as you evolve through different stages of life. Remember to keep it simple and be appropriate. Your wardrobe should always reflect your unique personality and lifestyle.

Inexpensive Quality

Inexpensive buying tactics are easy to achieve. Opt for quality fabrics such as cotton, silk and wool. Compare these to nylon, polyester and other synthetics. Some quality textiles are machine washable and some can be easily dried either laid flat, or hung. Pay attention to details such as seams and button styles. Are the buttons easy or difficult to fasten? Does the zipper close all the way, or does it easily get cought on the fabric? Another important issue are hemlines. Where do they fall on your arms, legs, waist? Are they practical for your body type? If you have any question, either buy a different size or choose an alternate, yet similar label with designs you are attracted to. Always shop with your heart, and never just by someone else's opinion. Stay true to yourself and try to keep your shopping experiences positive, because it will show when you wear that outfit outside of the store.

Yes, there was music playing. Nothing to over the top with the selection...very care free. The staff there were so friendly and very personable.
