Best Summer Hair Tips From Celeb Hairstylist Riccardo Maggiore

Summer hair can be tricky. The humidity, the summer sun and incredibly high temperatures can leave your locks a bit frazzled. So we went directly to celeb stylist Riccardo Maggiore from the Riccardo Maggiore Salon who believes you can have healthy, beautiful hair during the summer months if you know how to properly take care of it for some summer hair care tips. After all he has styled and tamed Sarah Jessica Parker's glorious mane. Here's the dish:

Fine Hair:
For fine hair, long layers are ideal. The layers will create movement and volume. This is perfect for the hot, summer months.

Wavy Hair:
Wavy hair is great for summer; it’s like beach hair without even stepping foot on a beach! Work with that texture and use plenty of moisturizer to emphasize the waviness.

Curly Hair:
Heavy layers are good for curly hair too. However, you don’t want to over-layer the hair. It should be cut long enough to achieve the desired style.

Thick Hair:
For thick, straight hair, increase layers to achieve more movement and further thin hair in order to accomplish a look that heavy hair sometimes will not allow.

How can you avoid scalp/part burns?
Try to avoid parts in your hair all together! Use a fashionable headband or scarf to slick hair back. But if you must part your hair, use a sun specific product with a UV protectant, like Riccardo Maggiore Rinnova Texturizer, a unique leave-in treatment which contains sunscreen agents to protect hair from damaging UV rays.

What's the best way to deal with summer dryness?
Summer sun and heat can cause major dryness to hair. The key is to moisturize! Put tons of moisture in your hair. Use moisturizing shampoos, deep conditioners, leave-in conditioners – anything that will maximize moisture.

If you plan to hit the beach or pool, apply oil or a product with SPF to the hair. This will create a “seal” that will protect and prevent salt water, chlorine or sun to penetrate and cause damage.

What's a great tip for dealing with summer frizzies?
Find a product that will help combat frizziness, like Riccardo Maggiore Luminoso Anti Frizz Drops, a glossy finishing product that helps to smooth and seal the hair cuticle, offering a radiant luster while eliminating the frizzies and static electricity.

The best way to control curls during the summer?
The best way to control natural curls is to use products that moisturize. Use a moisturizer, like leave-in conditioner, to produce long, flowing curls, and heavy product, like gel, to produce tighter curls.

The Best Hair Salons In New York City | L’Atelier de Laurie

I believe great hair is the best accessory a woman can have. Yesterday I took a little trip to the East Village to check out the haute salon known only to the 'insiders". From models to actresses and socialites in between, L’Atelier de Laurie serves as the salon of choice for NY stylistas. L’Atelier de Laurie is an intimate chateau like salon tucked away and decorated in fantastical antiques. A great departure from the almost robotic fifth ave salons, L’Atelier de Laurie offers a comforting atmosphere that's outlandishly romantic.

L’Atelier de Laurie is the creation of celebrity stylist Laurie Foley. My stylist at L’Atelier de Laurie, Mauricio is not a hairstylist but something more like an artist. He was able to lift my hair into a new dimension with a fabulous razor cut and stunning color L’Atelier de Laurie specializes in hair painting to obtain the most natural looking hair possible. Once you experience this fabulous salon you will fall in love. I am looking forward to my next visit.

Beauty Buzz | Silk'n SensEpil At Home Innovative Light-based Device For Hair Removal

I always dread facing hair removal - there's hardly ever anything glamorous about it, even in the most luxurious spa. IPL (Intense Pulse Light) has been the latest and most effective technology for hair growth reduction for the past few years. Silk’n recently released the SensEpil system, the newest innovation in the IPL. This was completely painless it comes in a cute, compact package.
The cost for this system is small portion of what you would pay for full treatment at a spa, and the only replacement piece is a bulb that lasts 750 flashes. Like IPL at a spa, you should be gentle with your skin afterwards and wear a nice SPF if the skin is exposed to the skin, but unlike post-IPL at a spa any effect to the skin itself is barely noticeable. This treatment is most effective with light olive to fair skin, with dark hair and intended for body hair.

After using it for only 4 sessions on one area (about 10 flashes per session), over the course of 2 months,I have noticed a visible difference in the regrowth - it is silkier and finer. I have added this to my bi-weekly Sunday night beauty treatment in which you can go begin and complete session of treatment on a selected area in the length of a song or two on your play list. After using this product, I really can’t imagine going back to scheduling and accommodating time for appointments at a medical facility! The ultimate luxury of IPL - having it at home. Get yours here. -Virginia Wong, HM Beauty Editor

Beauty Buzz | David Babaii Shampoo And Conditioner

The secret behind my fabulous, weightless and shiny hair is David Babaii's hydrating shampoo and conditioner. They are made of exotic ingredients including wild orchid, blue algae and cupuacu butter. I've been using both products for the past few weeks and I have to say I am very impressed with how luxurious they are. You will feel the difference when you try them. The texture is extremely smooth and light weight and won't strip your hair of natural oils and is great for colored hair. After you blow-dry and style you will delight in how soft your hair is. Especially during the colder months my hair tends to be dry but with the hydrating line my hair feels extremely replenished. 10% of sales goes to Wildaid. To purchase click here.

Shopping For Headbands, The New Must Have Accessory

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been a fan of headbands. There’s something timelessly elegant about what such a small hairpiece can do for your look. As an accessory, it completes your outfit. As a separate entity, it can define who you are and what your mood is. Jennifer Behr has an excellent selection of headbands to choose from. If you’ve ever seen an episode of Gossip Girl, you may already know that Blair Waldorf’s headbands come from her designs. However, these headbands come at a hefty price ($$-$$$), but they are indeed gorgeous.

My favorite place to look at headbands is Nordstrom. Nordstrom has some great headbands that are often on sale; not only that, but they’re comfortable and every single one of them have a specific style about them that makes them beautiful to simply stare at.
For the holidays try the new Holiday Jewels Collection from Goody, from rhinestone encrusted to sexy satin, these headbands will make you look fabulous, flirty and hip. Adding a great headband will automatically update that little black dress.

If you’re on a budget, Forever21 also has a decent selection of headbands that you can take a look at. They will typically have a variety of headbands ranging from normal solids to peacock-designed and feathered pieces.
I’ve also bought a couple of headbands from Etsy, an online store where sellers will make things handmade and sell them at their own price. Etsy is a great way to shop if you’re a fan of handmade items, or if you just want to be able to browse through things and buy things to your own liking and budget. Headband prices range, but you have a wider variety to choose from.

If you’re into something simple that you can just use to push your hair back with, I would suggest just taking a look at your normal clothing stores. The Gap has a selection of headbands that are fairly simple including plaids and solid colors that will go with most every outfit. J Crew also has a few girls’ headbands for relatively cheap prices.
I’ve found a number of headbands at all these places and more; the best headband should not only be just fashionable, but comfortable to wear and not too tight. My best advice? Keep your eyes open. You never know what you may find at the places where you least expect.

T3 Refresh Volumizing Dry Shampoo is a favorite of busy models who have little time to primp between shows. You simply spray the T3 Refresh to your scalp especially, then I like to spray it randomly around my hair and then flip my head over and brush vigorously. This product will refresh your hair and take out all excess oil and odors from your scalp. Your tresses will look salon worthy in a flash. It's a great way to resurrect that perfect blowout you had two days ago without stripping your hair of moisture.

An Infamous Beauty Ritual

Beauty is pain, and pain is vain. That old adage has coursed my mind ever since I was a little girl. But how far will you go to feel sexy? The notorious Brazilian wax has attracted millions of women throughout the globe. After hibernating all winter, I needed to thaw myself and experience a spring awakening. Out of curiosity, I decided to book an appointment at my local Aveda spa. Twenty minutes and $75 later, I was relieved and happy with the results. Gwyneth Paltrow once said that the Brazilian wax changed her life. I totally agree.

For those brave women out there who want to experience this, here are some pointers. Do some research before you book your appointment. Spas have different rates, which can range anywhere from $20 to $75. It would be wise to ask your girlfriends if they can refer you to an experienced aesthetician. Also, ask the spa what kind of wax they use. Hard wax is better than strip wax because it grabs onto the hair not the skin. Make sure that your hair is the right length before you get it waxed, about ¼ of an inch is perfect for optimal results. Mentally prepare yourself, but also take two Advil a half hour before your appointment. Try to avoid aspirin because it’s a blood thinner. During your appointment, don’t forget to breathe. It’s kind of like going to the gynecologist, it’s awkward at first, but remember that your aesthetician is a professional who has many daily appointments. Decide whether you want a landing strip or want to go all out before you get there. Some women opt for designs like hearts, lightning bolts, or initials. Don’t forget to get your aesthetician’s business card so you can book your next appointment with the same person. You’ll be able to enjoy your results for four to six weeks, but don’t forget to use a loofah to exfoliate and prevent ingrown hairs. Even though the Brazilian wax isn’t for everyone, it’s absolutely addicting. Trust me, you won’t be the only one who falls in love with the results.

More Tips for using your Bespoke Labs T3 Evolution Hairdryer

This model (no. 83888-se) has eight different settings, which I've had time to experiment with. When drying your roots, keep the dryer on the middle or lowest heat setting, and at the lowest speed. This setting is perfect for the hair close to your scalp, keeping your skin from burning, and to create smooth face framing results.

For drying the middle sections and tips, use the high speed setting, with either the medium or high heat setting. This will result in faster drying time, and smooth out the ends of your hair.

Overall, this beauty wonder has kept my hair from that dreaded blowdryer "blowout" we all have grown to hate.

Hairstylist Interview: Moulay NYC

Moulay is a high profile hairstylist making a wave in the New York salon scene! Having styled the likes of Gwen Stefani, Moulay is shear genius! So we had an insider interview with Moulay to get the scoop on his career, the styling tips and how to choose the right hair stylist. Enjoy! http://www.moulaynyc.com/

1. When did you first realize that you wanted to be a hairstylist? I modeled as a teenager living in Paris and saw the beautiful hair styles being created backstage. I was inspired to do it myself.

2. How did you get your start in the industry? I started as an apprentice at Alexandre in Paris, but things really started to happen for me when I came to New York and got a job working as Jonathan Sahag's assistant.

3. What career moves did you make to get your current positions as NYC’s premier hairstylist? I pushed myself, everywhere I worked, to continue learning from the best stylists and perfecting my techniques. At Sahag I learned the dry-cutting technique that Jon was famous for; at Bumble & Bumble I perfected my razoring technique. I was recognized for my talent and sent to represent Bumble & Bumble in Paris, and there continued to take inspiration from that beautiful city and its culture of art and fashion. That positioned me well upon my return to New York to take on the role of Artistic Director at Lush salon. Lush unfortunately closed its doors shortly after September 11, 2001--it was located in Tribeca--but I was quickly picked up by Prive Salon in Soho. Now, as I open my own salon, all of these experiences have prepared me well to realize my vision and create a beautiful environment where each client will enjoy exceptional service and achieve a look that helps them to achieve their best image.

4. Do you or did you ever have a famous hairstylist you admired? There are many--Sahag of course. I also admire Michael Gordon, founder of Bumble & Bumble, for the incredible company he built. There are others who are simply artists--Odile Gilbert for example.

5. What do you think sets you apart from other stylist? Well, of course my skills, but really I think it's my philosophy--I believe that everyone has a unique beauty that can be enhanced by the right hairstyle. Anyone who sits in my chair receives 100% of my focus, and knows that they will leave with a look that suits their hair type, their face shape, their lifestyle.

6. You have styled Gwen Stefani, Uma Thurman, as well as other celebrities. During your experience styling for celebs, who did you have most fun styling for? Celebrities are fun to work with because they have interesting lives and are fun to talk to--most of them are pretty down-to-earth. I really don't have a favorite.

7. What are the most common mistakes women make with their hair? The most common mistake is trying for a hairstyle that really doesn't work for one's hair type, bone structure, or lifestyle. It's great to bring pictures to your stylist so that he can get a sense of the image you are going for, but work with the stylist to adapt the look for you.

8. What steps should women follow when choosing or switching hairstylist? First, find a stylist that will listen to you, and will work with you to help you achieve the look you are going for. Personality fit is really important. Switching hairstylist happens all the time--if you are switching stylists but staying at the same salon, be honest. Tell the stylist you love his work, but want to try something new.

9. What is the most important thing every woman should do for their hair? Take care of your hair like you take care of any other part of your body. Regular conditioning is a must to keep hair healthy, soft, and easy to manage.

10. What do you hope to accomplish within the next few years as you continue your profession? My focus right now is on realizing my vision with the opening of my salon--a beautiful, peaceful place where clients can come to relax, enjoy their treatment, and leave feeling great about themselves.
